TL63 NE STEEPLE BUMPSTEAD 4/5 Cootes Farmhouse 7/8/52 II
House, C16, extended in C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Hall range aligned approx. N-S, jettied at the N end, with axial chimney stack at S end. Crosswing to S, jettied to the E, and 2 S extensions with end chimney stack. 2 storeys. E elevation, 6-panel door, 3 tripartite double-hung sash windows of 4-12-4 lights, early C19, and one C20 casement window. Bressumer with running vine carving on 2 plain brackets. First floor, 4 late C17/early C18 windows, each with one wrought iron casement, and 1,2,1 and 1 fixed lights respectively, with rectangular leading, and one C20 casement window. The bressumer of the gable projects and is carved with running vine ornament, and below it 2 brackets similarly carved form a depressed arch, with 3 turned pendants. The bargeboards are original and similarly carved, with a modern finial. Grouped diagonal shafts on main chimney stack. The glass of one of the first-floor front windows has an inscription on the outside 'John Choat 24 Feb 1778', probably the glazier. RCHM 30.
