9/72 No. 76 (formerly 31.10.66 listed as No. 76 (Woodlands))

GV II

House. C17, altered in C18, extended in C19. Timber framed and plastered with facade of red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red plain tiles; extension of gault brick in Flemish bond, roofed with slate. Main range facing NW, with 3 rear stacks, and original wing to rear left, splayed to a parallelogram plan to follow the line of Horn Lane. Early C19 gault wing to rear centre, with internal stack at right side. Late C19 wing to rear right, plastered and roofed with slate, with 2 axial stacks; the 3 wings are adjacent. 2 single-storey extensions to right. 2 storeys and attics. The facade of the left 2/3 of the house is set forward, with a 5-window range of C18 sashes of 12 lights with flat arches of gauged brick and crown glass; one to left of the door has an altered lower sash. Central 8-panel door, the 2 bottom panels flush, the others fielded, in doorcase with panelled jambs and soffit, plaster pilasters, entablature and moulded pediment; this facade has been pecked to roughen the texture. The right part is of smooth handmade brick of comparable age, with one C19/20 sash of 12 lights in each storey, and similar arches, and continues to the right with a stepped parapet to conceal a lean-to extension. 3 C19 casements in gabled dormers, and one in right hip. Fully hipped roofs. The left return and rear elevation of the left wing are bricked up to first-floor level, plastered above. On the upper storey of the rear elevation C18 and early C19 sashes remain on all 3 wings, with crown glass; one of 16 lights on the left wing, 2 of 12 lights with flat arches of gauged brick on the middle wing, one of 12 lights and one of 10+10 lights on the right wing. The timber frame is mainly concealed by interior finishes, but one sharply jowled post is exposed at the rear right corner. The beams, where exposed and unmutilated, are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops; one at the left end of the main range, above the upper storey, is plastered over, with C18 moulded covings. Despite the step in the facade the main range is continuous. Early C19 geometrical stair in middle wing, with wreathed mahogany handrail, cast iron newel encircled by stick balusters, and scrolled tread-ends. Grey marble fireplace in this wing. C18/19 fireplace in left wing with Delft tiles. Clasped purlin roof with arched collars at half-bay intervals, all original. C18 folding shutters, panelled and fielded, in front ground-floor windows. RCHM 33.
