9/28 Short Bridge

GV II

Road bridge and railings over Back Ditch. Early C19. Red brick and cast iron. Aligned N-S over leat to Abbey Mill, which is aligned NE-SW. One semi-circular arch, with C20 brickwork above in E side. 2 iron ties through bridge with cast iron roundels at each end. Cast iron coping of stilted segmental section. Cast iron railings at each side, comprising a heavy stanchion of urn baluster form with urn finial at each end, and 8 intermediate stanchions of similar shape but lighter, without finials. 4 plain square bars between stanchions (5 in end sections). Rail of wave section, turning outwards at each end, with short square spikes. Oval plate embossed 'LC' (for Little Coggeshall) at base of SW stanchion. Height of railing above road, average 1.20 metres. Named Short Bridge in a map of 1731 (Essex Record Office D/DU 19/2). Formerly a toll bridge (J.S. Gardner (ed.), Coggeshall, Essex, 1951, 32).
