SX 07 NW ST KEW TREWETHERN 5/235 Carns Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C17. Stone rubble. Steeply pitched slate roof with gable ends and stone rubble end stacks with left-hand stack rebuilt in late C20. Rare survival of plan type with central unheated room. Probably originally with hall/kitchen on right heated by gable end stack, unheated central room and parlour on left heated by end stack. The framed stair appears to be in situ between the parlour and central room and the entrance appears to have led directly into the hall/kitchen with a narrow passage across the front of the house leading to the central room, stair and parlour. 2 storeys regular 3-window front. Ground floor with 2 late C19/C20 6-pane sashes on left, lean-to stone rubble porch with C20 door in circa mid C17 ovolo-moulded timber doorframe with scroll stops. 6-pane sash to right. First floor with 2 circa C19 16-pane sashes with 6-pane sash between. Interior Partitions probably largely in situ. The entrance appears to have originally led directly into the hall/kitchen on the right-hand side. The hall kitchen has a heavy ovolo-moulded cross beam with scroll stops which is supported on the left-hand side by a vertical ovolo-moulded post with similar scroll stops at base. The slight ceiling beams which runs at right angles to the cross beam appear to be probably C19 although one may be contemporary. The fireplace lintel is chamfered with scroll stops which have been embedded in the masonry. Cloam oven. A small corridor, running across the front of the house gives access to the unheated central room, stair and parlour. The central room was converted into a bathroom in the late C20. The parlour on the left has a complete set of 8 ovolo-moulded ceiling beams with scroll stops and a fireplace with a chamfered unstopped lintel. The stair appears to be in situ with ovolo-moulded newels on left-hand side and moulded handrail. Solar above parlour with C17 timber fireplace with chamfered lintel with scroll stops on chamfered timber corbelled brackets. Although blocked and covered with several layers of wallpaper and paint, the fireplace appears of high quality. Circa C18 roof structure with principals chamfered well below collar level, collars partly halved, lapped and pegged onto face of principals with 4 oak pegs, and trenched purlins. Full inspection of roof structure not possible as the roof space is not accessible. Carns Farmhouse has a most interesting C17 plan with a central unheated room which is a rare type in Cornwall; and it has several interesting internal features of high quality.
