3/687 Terraces, gates and loggia in Italian Garden at - Dropmore
- II
C19. Across the front of the garden, a stone balustrade with central opening; 4 stone piers with a vase on each end pier. Through the opening, a path flanked by hedges and leading to a flight of stone steps with flanking walls with pierced balustrade. Left and right a terrace. It terminates, on the left, with the entrance to the Pinetum and, on the right, with a loggia. Entrance with square cement-rendered gate piers with inset panels on sides and moulded caps. Fine C18 wrought iron gates from Huntercombe Manor; wrought iron side railings. Loggia C19 and raised on steps whose flanking walls terminate in pedestals with urns. Cement-rendered. Three bays wide; one bay deep. Facade with 3 arches divided from each other by marble Tuscan columns broken forward and carrying their own pieces of entablature. Flat roof with balustraded parapet. Side openings with Serlian motif, the central arched opening standing on marble barley-sugar columns. On the terrace and in axis with the flight of steps, another flight, double and leading to a pond whose wall is decorated with 7 stone cupids in various poses. Behind the pond, a back wall with inset carved marble panels.
