HIGH STREET 1. 5135 (South Side) FENNY STRATFORD Premises occupied by Valentine Ord & Nagles Factory SP 8834 2/39 II* 2. C15 or possibly earlier origin, the front position built 1495. Originally a Chantry House. Large timber framed building with cross wings, divided into cottages on south side C16/C17. The road end has unfortunate 2 storey circa 1920-30 office addition. Brick and stuccoed nogging. Steep gable end tiled and corrugated roofs. The 1st floor of cross wings slightly jettied. Windows later or blocked. Inside the roof structure is exposed on 1st floor. 7 bays to main roof with butt purlin arched brace tie beam, and crown post in some cases. Hammer head wall posts and one truss with modified hammer beam. Later wind braces. The north cross wing has 3 bay roof and cross bay, with wind braces and arched-brace collar trusses. The south cross wing retains some original window frames. An important survival despite alterations for factory.
