House. Three principal building periods: C16, mid C17 and early C19. Timber frame, red brick in the back and Haddenham gault brick on the front. Plain tiled roofs with some modern tiles incorporated and tumbled parapets. C16 building at south end. Timber frame visible internally. Cased in C17-Cfl red brick, English bond at the rear and in early C19 gault brick on the front. Plain tiled roof. The projecting side stack to the south wall of dark red brick has embattled offsets and has two shafts linked at the capping. One corner of the first stage of the stack has a stop chamfer, now partly obscured. It is probably mid C17. Originally this building had the gable end to the road. This was altered in early C19 when roof was rebuilt in line with the main range. Two storeys. The fenestration on the front is of early C19 recessed twelve pane hung sashes. The rear gable end was rebuilt in C18 in clear red brick, English bond, with two C18 cross frame casements. In the mid C17 the principal range parallel to the road was built. Red brick, mainly English bond, on a plinth but the front is early C19 and of Haddenham gault brick. Roof gabled and rebuilt C19. Original ridge stack rebuilt above the ridge in gault brick. Lobby entry plan also changed in early C19 and now between the C16 building and the mid C17 house. Two storeys. C19 recessed twelve pane hung sashes. Doorway in round headed arch in square head. Reeded doorcase with paterae enrichment, panelled door and glazing bars to fanlight. At the rear the mid C17 brickwork is visible, and there is a plat band between the two storeys. Segmental header arches to blocked window openings at first floor and to two coupled arches at ground floor. Much of the rear wall of the C17 house is obscured by early C19 gault brick dining room and staircase extension. Hipped, slate roof. Two storeys. Recessed twelve pane hung sashes, except for a tripartite hung sash to the dining-room and round headed stairlight sash. The domestic wing was added probably in C19 to the north end. Orange brick and plain tiled roof. Interior: Timber framing of C16 building visible at first floor. Main post with jowled head and close set studwork of heavy scantling. Timbers weathered on north side indicating that they were exposed and that this wall was external. The framing for an oriel window of three lights is also intact. At ground floor in the same wing there are vacant mortices in the middle rail of the same wall and on the south side above the mid C17 inserted stack there is a chamfered middle rail. The ceiling in this room is also exposed. Unmoulded joists of heavy scantling and laid flat. The main beams are chamfered. The roof over the rear of this wing is original. It is of clasped side purlin type. Another purlin has been inserted above the original. This is associated with the rebuilding of two gables and wall. The C17 range has ceiling beams and inglenook bressumers with ovolo moulding. There are abutting inglenooks. One has C19 cupboard with bead and quirk moulding and possibly was a kitchen. The C19 details in the house include a white marble fireplace surround, sliding shutters to the dining-room, tripartite window and an open string staircase with winder, scrolls, tread ends and mahogany rail. There are paved and tiled floors, chamfered ceiling beams, and half-round and elliptical arches between rooms and as a screen between the hall and staircase.
