WISTOW PARSONAGE STREET 1. 5140 Church of St John the Baptist TL 28 SE 1/24 30.5.58 I 2. Parish Church. C14 part of south wall of chancel and part of south wall of south aisle. Late C15 or early C16 nave, chancel, north and south aisle. Mid-late C16 west tower of Barnack stone and rubblestone. Of three stages with moulded plinth and embattled parapet. Three stage diagonal buttressing. One to south-west corner with small corbel to first stage. Each wall of bell chamber has two four-centred lights in square heads with moulded labels. Second stage of south wall has small loop window in pointed head. West window restored. Three four-centred lights in square head with moulded label. West doorway in three-centred arch with square head. Newel stair in north-east angle with two loop windows. Nave of pebble-rubble with Barnack stone dressings. Moulded parapet and gable end parapet. Large grotesque gargoyles. Each side of clerestory has two pairs of two cinquefoil light windows with vertical tracery in four-centred head. Moulded string course carried over windows as label. South aisle mainly pebble-rubble with some stone, and coursed Barnack stone in south-west part of south wall. Moulded stone parapet With two grotesque gargoyles. Two stage diagonal buttressing. South doorway of two chamfered orders in two centred head with moulded label, part restored. Two octagonal projections with pyramidal tops flank doorway. C14 door and ironwork restored. Modern gabled porch. Window in east wall of three cinquefoil lights with vertical tracery in four-centred head with moulded label terminating in grotesque beast stops. One similar window in south wall. West window similar but of two lights. C18 sundial on south wall. North aisle of pebble-rubble and some freestone with Barnack dressings. Embattled stone parapet with merlons removed. Three beast and grotesque gargoyles. Two stage diagonal buttressing. North doorway with hollow moulded jambs in two-centred arch with roll moulded label. Repaired C14 door of feathered battens with original ironwork. One window of three cinquefoil lights with vertical tracery in four-centred head with moulded label to each of west, north and east walls. Chancel mainly of pebble-rubble, some freestone. Barnack stone dressings. C12 fragments of earlier building in north wall. Stone parapet with gargoyles at north-east and south-east corners. Two stage diagonal buttressing. East window of four cinquefoil lights with vertical tracery with moulded label terminating in mast and grotesque stops. One similar window but of three lights in north wall of chancel. South wall of chancel has one similar window and one C14 window of two trefoil ogee lights in square head with window continued below transome. One C14 small doorway in pointed arch. C19 door. Staircase turret of rood loft with pyramidal roof of octagonal form. Interior: West tower arch of two hollow moulded orders in two-centred arch. Responds with attached shafts terminating in moulded capitals. Nave of two bays. Two-centred arches of two moulded orders, outer continuous. inner on attached shafts with moulded capitals carved with paterae. Moulded labels with grotesque beast stops. Moulded bases. Chancel arch similar to nave arches. Roof of nave modern with four late C15 or early C16 king-post roof trusses on carved stone corbels. Moulded tie beams. Carved figures to wall posts of main tie beams and ends of intermediate tie beams. C19 chancel interior, except for late C15 or early C16 piscinae and sediliae. C15 tower arch screen, upper part originally part of rood screen, lower modern. Late C15 or early C16 porches screening south aisle, with modern restoration. C13 stone font. Octagonal tapering bowl on central stem with two round and two octagonal subsidiary shafts with moulded capitals and bases. C15 stained glass in west window of south aisle, originally in east window of chancel. "The Annunciation"; "The Resurection". C15 poppy head pew ends incorporated into modern reading desk. Late C17 marble wall monument above south doorway. Corinthian columns supporting entablature with hour glasses, vase and cherubs' heads. (RCIiI4 Huntingdonshire p,293).
