HILTON Church of St Mary 1. 5140 Church of St Mary Magdalene TL 26 NE 9/23 30.5.58 I 2. Parish Church. C14 West tower C15 chancel, nave, North and South aisles and south porch. Mainly pebble rubble with some freestone. Barnack stone and clunch dressings. West tower of three stages. Plinth, diagonal buttressing and embattled parapet. West doorway has moulded jambs and two centred arch with moulded label. West window of two cinquefoil lights, with quatrefoil in two centred head with moulded label. One similar, smaller window in each face of wall of bell chamber. Fragments of earlier church applied to exterior of North and West walls of tower. Nave roof of slate with stone copings to gable end parapet. Ranges of four modern windows to clerestory. North and south aisles have restored windows with vertical tracery. C15 splays and sills. C15 south porch. Gabled with moulded stone parapet. Outer doorway of two moulded orders, inner carved, on attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases. Two centred arch and moulded jambs to south doorway. Plain tiled roof to chancel with stone coping to gable end parapet. Two partly restored C15 windows with four centred heads in south wall. C14 south doorway with wave moulded jambs and two centred head with moulded label and lion mask stops. C15 East window partly restored. Interior has C13 two centred chancel arch of two hollow chamfered orders. Square responds, each with a semi-octagonal attached shaft with moulded capitals. Nave arcades of four bays. Two centred arches, each of two moulded arches with the inner order carried on attached half round shafts with moulded capitals and bases. C15 nave roof of four bays with five king post trusses. C15 roof to North aisles. C15 font. Plain octagonal bowl, hollow splayed under edge, plain stem and hollow chamfered base. 1632 plaque of Prince of Wales feathers, removed from Park Farm, Hilton, now demolished.
