G.V. II

Hospital, 1891 by C.E. Ponting. Brick with stone dressings, plain tiled and lead roofs. Asymetrical cruciform plan with rear side wing. Renaissance and Queen Anne details in the style of Norman Shaw. 2 storeys and 3 windows under gable with ball finialsto each side, coped verges with central stepped finial, central block breaks forward with large bay window containing door with transom light and wooden key with panel containing swag and festooned fruit under cornice, small window to side with brick relieving arch and decorative stone apron, wooden balustraded balcony, central mullion and transom casement with glazing bars and top lights at 1st floor level with decorative stone head and jamb shafts in angled brick. Clock tower to right has door in stone round arch with key, memorial plaque above in cased and swept architrave, broken scrolled pediment over, clock at 2nd floor level in scrolled and foliate stone surround with plain pediment over and decorative brickwork, open arcade of 4 x 4 round- headed arches under cornice which breaks forward at corners, brick parapet and lead cupola with bell and weathervane. Left wing has shaped gable with stone fan finial, coped verges and ball finials to sides, irregular windows all with glazing bars and stone aprons, continuous stone weathered string, stepped stack at corner. Right wing has ground floor oval window in decorative brick surround with stone segmental open pediment, slit windows to clock tower at 1st and 2nd floor. Rear wing has small lead cupola and dormers at rear. Interior: dog leg stair with flat balusters and decorative newel at ground floor, boxed handrail; moulded beams with large moulded stops, 6 panelled doors in lugged architraves with pediments over at ground floor.
