ST 58 SE ALMONDSBURY HOLLYWOOD LANE (north east side) 11/34 Tower at Hollywood Tower and 21.10.52 boundary wall - II
3-stage clock tower. Early/mid C19. Coursed rubble and stone dressings. Square plan, Italianate and Early English style. Weathered angle buttresses, door with pointed arch in chamfered stone surround, hood mould with mask stops, with arms of Sir Stanley White over, moulded string courses, lancet with wooden louvres at 1st floor level in eaved architrave, clock set in upper level in decorative stone surround, stone Lombard frieze under coved cornice with rosettes, embattled parapet. Sides have 2-light window with Y tracery in stone surround and one slit window in eaved architrave at ground level, lancet at 1st floor and 2 windows with trefoil heads at 2nd floor, upper one with mask stops to hood mould. Rear has angled stair turret with slit windows. Octagonal stone cupola with blind windows to each side with roundels in spandrels and blind cross slits. Low boundary wall in ashlar on rubble plinth with pierced trefoils and coping has shield set in roundel on piers at corners and to each side of entry. Reputed to have been built as an observatory.
