5/155 Clifton Lodge Archway flanking Walls and Section of Estate Wall adjoining and to the south - II
Archway, lodge, flanking walls and wall with railings to south of lodges. Circa 1885-86. Coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings; roofs concealed behind embattled parapets; rubble and freestone stacks. Asymmetrical, in a Tudor Gothic style. In the centre is a 4-centred archway; ribbed vault with carved bosses; above is a 3-light oriel with cusped tracery and flanking niches with statues of knights; stepped and embattled parapet with Smyth arms. To each side of the arch is a canted, 3 storey tower with an embattled parapet corbelled out on cusped arcaded plate; square windows in chamfered surrounds on ground floor, 4-centre headed windows above; moulded string with gargoyles. To the south of the left section is a projecting square bay and a stair turret; beyond is a 2 storey, single bay wing. To the north of the right section is a 5-stage polygonal tower with single cusped ogee lights; 2 storey, single bay wing beyond. Flanking each lodge is a rubble quadrant wall approximately 5-6 yards long and terminating in a square, embattled pier. To the south a section of wall extends for approximately 50 yards: rubble with freestone dressings and coping; the wall is stepped down at intervals where there are square piers; decorative cast-iron railings. A lodge to the Ashton Court (q.v.) estate.
