GV II
Half pair (the other half destroyed in the Blitz and rebuilt) and 2 pairs of houses in planned street. c1829, attributed to John Foulston. Stucco, with stucco detail, on probable rubble; dry slate and asbestos slate stepped roofs behind parapets with entablature with moulded cornices; segmental-roofed attic dormers except to Nos 10 and 14 with later dormers; brick end stacks. PLAN: double-depth plan plus rear service wings. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic over basement; overall 10-window range: 2-window range of surviving right-hand half of former pair [No.10] on the left, and 2 pairs of houses, each pair with a symmetrical 4-window front with centre broken forward, but with differences in surviving original features. Original stucco detail includes: channelled rustication to ground floor of Nos 10 and 12, recessed segmental-arched panels to each ground-floor bay, moulded 1st-floor architraves to Nos 10, 11 and 14, and sill strings to all. Original 16-pane hornless sash to basement of No.11, with C20 horned sashes above, otherwise late C20 windows and doors. Nos 11 and 12 have their original pilastered porch with segmental-arched pediment with central wreath over entablature with Greek key pattern; Nos 13 and 14 retain only the remains of the pediment to an otherwise C20 porch. INTERIOR: not inspected but may retain original features of interest. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls surmounted by wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials and stanchions with urn finials. Although damaged during the Blitz, this street is still a good example of early C19 house design and part of an important planned group on the Hoe.
