GV II
Large house. Dated 1641; rebuilt mid-late C19, for members of the Dawson family. Gritstone rubble, graduated stone slate roof. 2-storey, 4-bay main hall range with large porch bay projecting, bay 3, and an added parallel 2- storey range with separate gabled roof to rear of bays 1 and 2. Quoins. A C20 panelled porch door in pointed arch with hoodmould to right of centre, two 2-light windows above flanking a reset datestone with raised lettering " CD " Restored chamfered mullion windows on each floor, 2 of 5 lights to 1641 left of porch and one of 7 lights to right, all with hoodmoulds. Stone gutter brackets, shaped kneelers, gable copings. Banded stacks to each end and to ridge, right of porch. Rear: central door in plain surround; a 20- pane sash window to left and a 3-light window to right and to upper floor. Interior, main range: 2 fine C17 fireplaces; that in the central living- room has a wide 3-piece arch with joggled keystone and incised lines in imitation of joggled voussoirs; that in the well-lit parlour to right has a large cambered arch supported by corbelled jambs. In the porch the original staircase with short knopped balusters, probably restored or reset in C19. The 3-bay C17 house with 2 fine fireplaces and staircase- porch was almost completely rebuilt in the C19, the high ceilings to ground and first floors suggesting replacement of all interior timberwork. The rear range contains a kitchen and dairy with service rooms above, probably occupied by the tennants while the Dawsons, whose main house was probably at Langcliffe, used the main range for shooting parties and summer accommodation.
