Two chest tombs approximately 5 metres south of the church of St. Mary

Two chest tombs. Mid C18. Sandstone. The northern tomb has a cyma moulded
top slab and the lettering is worn: "Here lieth the Body/of Richard
Constan-/tine who departed/this life September/the 15th 1746 and in/the
63rd year of his/Age./Jane ye wife of the above/ Ric.d. died/Fbr. ye 21st
1755". The more southerly tomb has an incised line and roll moulding to
the top slab and the sharply cut lettering is well preserved: "Here lieth
the Body of/Thos. Son of Jonathan & /Margaret Constantine/ who died Fbr. ye
25th. 1745/ in the 18th Year of His Age/ The above Margaret/died Janr. ye
28th 1727-8/ Also the Body of the a/bove Jonathan Who died/May 17th. 1768
Aged 73". Both tombs with solid stone bases. Henry Constantine was one of
the 13 tenants of the manor of Conistone who bought his holding after
1583. They may have lived at the Old Hall (q.v.)
