SETTLE MARKET PLACE SD 8063-8163 10/25 Shambles GV II

Shambles, probably C17 and C18 with 1890s cottages over. Rubble, stone dressings, slate roof. 3 storeys, 6 bays. Vaulted cellars consist of 3 broad segmental- headed arches, each one divided into 2 shops in front of which runs an open well; entry is via steps down from left and right. In front of the well is a loggia of 6 round-headed arches with plain impost blocks on square shafts. A similar row of arches above on the same plane as the facade has C20 shopfronts inserted. The shops, whose floors are just above ground level, were formerly approached via steps up in left and right gable ends, but access is now via C20 steps over the well. Above is a row of six 2-storey cottages which replaced single storey cottages reputed to be of C17 or probably C18 date in the late 1890s. The cottages are arranged in pairs. Each has an entrance and window on each storey; plain surrounds, half- dormer in the upper floor and ridge stack. The cottages are approached via steps in right-hand gable wall which lead to a balcony over the loggia.
