Large house. Early C18 with C19 alterations for Baynes family. Slobbered water-
shot masonry, stone dressings, stone slate roof. Central staircase plan. 2
storeys, 2 bays to side wings. 2 bays, 3 storeys to centre piece which breaks
forward slightly. Central entrance has Doric surround, pilasters, frieze of
metopes, triglyphs and guttae, open segmental pediment. Round-headed fanlight
with moulded surround; 9 panel door, upper 3 with diamond moulding. All windows
are cross with moulded architraves and flat-faced mullions and transoms: 6 to
ground and first floor, 2 to third floor. Stringcourse above lintel of each
row of windows. Slate sundial with iron gnomon within moulded architrave above
entrance. Quoins to gable ends and centre piece. Heavy moulded cornice. Shaped
gable kneelers, that on left reset in C19 left-hand weather wall which projects
from original gable. Gable end stacks and stack to left and right of centre
piece. Rear: 2 storeys, 4 bays, 2 centre bays gabled. Left-hand bay contains
4-light chamfered mullioned and transomed window with king mullion on both floors;
hoodmould to ground floor. Right-hand bay contains 3-light chamfered mullioned
and transomed window with dripstone to both floors. 2 centre bays contain 2-light
chamfered mullioned and transomed window on both floors with a ground floor drip-
stone; large cross stair window with moulded architrave and 2-light chamfered
mullioned and transomed window in the gable. Gable end kneelers, and kneelers
to centre gable.Interior: dining room and principal bedroom above staircase hall
are both panelled and have early C18 bolection moulded fireplaces; 6 panel doors.
Similar fireplace in additional bedroom. Large kitchen fireplace with plain
jambs on square base, moulded of impost level; 12 voussoirs and projecting key-
stone. King-post roof with collar and tie beam, trenched purlins. Wall to
garden. Rubble. Entrance to left and right with moulded surrounds in early
C18 style. Gatepiers. Ashlar. Rusticated shafts, moulded flanges to inner
faces. Moulded cap with cornice and ball finial.
