Details
BENTHAM RIDDING LAKE SD 66 NE 6/31 Ridding Lane Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Mid-late C17 with C18 and late C19 alterations. Slobbered rubble stone dressings, stone slate roof. Late C19 entrance front. 2 storeys, double fronted. Reused C17 entrance has moulded surround, heightened to take fanlight; decorated lintel inscribed 1664 with initials R H (Richard Hall); hoodmould. Rear: 2 storeys, 3 bays. Late C17 entrance to right of centre has moulded surround and segmental head. To right is ground-floor early C18 former 3-light window with moulded surround, mullions now gone, and to left is similar ground-floor window but 4-light with flat-faced mullions; C20 casements. Left-hand bay has one late C19 window per storey; sashes with glazing bars. Above door is C17 chamfered stair window, formerly 3-lights but right-hand light now blocked and left-hand mullion missing; C20 casement. To right on upper floor is C17 3-light double chamfered mullioned window and C20 casements and to left are remains of heightened C18 3-light window with mullions missing; C20 casements. Gable-end ridge stacks and ridge stack to right of centre. Interior: reputed to contain fireplace inscribed 'W X M 692 Honi Soit qui mal y pense'. Source: J Bibby A History of Bentham (n.d), pll.
