SK4392 ROTHERHAM MOORGATE ROAD (east side) 10/54 Moorgate Hall and attached outbuilding 19.10.51 (formerly listed as Moorgate Hall) II* Large house with attached outbuilding. C17, rebuilt early C18; late C18 outbuilding probably by John Platt for Samuel Tooker (Potts, pli). Deeply- coursed, dressed sandstone, Welsh slate roof; stone slates to outbuilding. Square on plan with internal angle to front right; outbuildings to right return (single-storey outbuilding not of special interest). 2 storeys with attics, total of 4 first-floor windows to entrance front. Entrance front: central 6-panel door (4 fielded, 2 flush) in ashlar surround. 4 sashes with thick glazing bars in square-faced surrounds, that to left of door blind and painted; continuous dripmould. Above door a small chamfered, round- arched window with stanchion and dripstone. To right a large sash with glazing bars in cavetto-moulded surround,matching window to left blind and painted. Internal angle to right infilled by lean-to garage; matching lst-floor sash. Eaves cornice forms gutter. Hipped roof with rebuilt, quoined, stack to front slope, hipped-roof dormers to side slopes. Rear: 1:3:1 bays. Central bays break forward, are 3-storeyed and have pediment and lst- and 2nd-floor quoinstrips and cornices, the lst-floor cornice continuing across outer bays. Ground floor: 16-pane sashes in architraves beneath continuous dripmould, central surround rusticated. 1st floor: sashes with glazing bars in architraves with double lintels and small keyblocks, central architrave eared and deeper (as doorway) and with segmental pediment above. 2nd floor: 3 horizontally-sliding sashes in architraves. Pediment corniced with oeil-de-boeuf (in architrave) in tympanum. Left return: 5 bays. Central 6-panel door at mid-floor height has eared architrave and external steps. Small sashes with glazing bars to ground floor, 5 large sashes to 1st floor in cavetto-moulded surrounds; bay-2 window blind. 3 roof dormers. Outbuilding: facade set back to left of rear of house has 2 doorways in bonded surrounds. Central door flanked by large flat-arched windows, right window with horizontally-sliding sash; 2 similar lst-floor windows have lintels tooled as voussoirs. Hipped roof with truncated ridge stack to right. Interior: excellent late C17 staircase with alternate barley-sugar and turned balusters. Separate stairs to attics with splat balusters (attics not inspected). Kitchen retains large elliptically-arched fireplace with imposts and keystone, opening infilled by good C19 cast-iron range. Some C17 wall-cupboards and panelled doors. Keyed round-arched doorhead in passage near attic stairs. 1st floor: pedimented doorway at head of stairs has bolection-moulded architrave; central rear room has marble fireplace and plaster frieze.
