SK4292 ROTHERHAM THE CROFTS (north end, off) 9/70 Office premises of George Wright (Rotherham) Ltd - II
Offices. Early C19 for Messrs. Tunnicliffe, Ball, Wheatley, Potter and Brown (Cockburn , p37). Ashlar sandstone, coated slate roof. Single storey, 4-bay entrance front has wing to rear left (not of special interest) and original, 3-bay, entrance facade to rear right now facing enclosed yard and given basement storey by fall of land. In Tudor Revival style. 3-bay facade: plinth. Outer bays break forward and each has doorway flanked by monolithic piers and cornice beneath offset, left doorway (boarded-up) gives access to through passage, right doorway has part-glazed double doors. Continuous stringcourse rises as hoodmould over central 3-light chamfered-mullion window. Upper floor: outer bays flanked by attached octagonal shafts rising as turrets and each bay with apron panel of shields and string course beneath Tudor-arched opening, bay 1 opening blind. Central bay has plain apron and string course beneath 3-light mullioned window with ogee-headed lights and hoodmoulds with blank-shield stops. Continuous moulded cornice beneath parapet which steps up over central blank shield. Miniature embattlements to outer bays and outer turrets. Square-cut gable copings. Moulded ridge-stack plinth to left, similar end-stack plinth to right; shafts missing. Front: less ornate. Doorway to bay 2 has double doors each with foiled light, deeply-chamfered surround. Hoodmoulds to flanking windows. Large Tudor-arched opening to basement through-passage on right, above it a large moulded corbel and single-light window. Illustration in Cockburn (p37) with note that the buildings formed lawyer's offices from 1777-1887. It is unlikely that the offices of the present building pre-date the early C19. J. H. Cockburn, Rotherham Lawyers During 350 Years, 1932.
