SHELF BRIGHOUSE AND DENHOLME SE 12 NW GATE ROAD (east side) 1/23 Guide Post (Stone Chair) at junction of West Street opposite the Duke of York Public House and slab attached to wall of No. 1 at NGR SE 117279

Guide post. Early C18. 2 large upright stone slabs set at an angle to each other joined at the top by an iron strap. Left face reads: 'STONE CHAIR ERECTED 001000241737 RE-ERECTED 1891 HALIFAX (hand points to right) BRADFORD'(Hand points to left). Right face reads (Hand points to left) 'DENHOLME GATE. BRIGHOUSE' (Hand points to right). One other stone dated 1737 probably part of the original structure is cemented to the wall of No. 1. Rear of slabs has triangular stone block set between the stone slabs acting as a seat thus giving the name Stone Chair to the monument and in subsequent times to the area it is sited in.
