BRIGHOUSE LAW LANE SE 12 SW 3/137 No. 37 (Law Farmhouse and attached barn) 3.1.67 (formerly listed under Southowram)

II

House, possibly 1618 (date in render over entrance). Hammer-dressed stone, rendered to front, stone slate roof. 2-storey south front of 4 rooms with principal doorway centrally placed to left of central ridge stack. This originally led to a cross passage. All windows are double chamfered mullioned, of 4, 6 transom window of 12 (now lacking transom) and 4 lights. Over are flat faced mullion windows mainly of 4 lights. Right hand return wall has extruded stack, to supposed parlour. Built over single storey aisle to rear is 2-storey early C18 gabled wing, with flat faced mullioned windows with double frames and square reveals, of 4 lights to ground floor and 3 lights to 1st floor. Quoins, coped gable and kneelers. Interior said to have evidence for firehood bressumer. Housebody has ovolo moulded spine beams and to east e evidence of former timbered wall with closing truss of 'A' strut king post type. Attached barn of single aisle construction with square headed cart entry set in portal at arcade. Of C17 appearance Wyn Westerdale, Law, Southowram (Report for Manchester University - unpublished).
