Details
SOWERBY BRIDGE WHARF STREET SE 0623-0723 (north side) 13/298 Wall with 2 gateways and gates to west and south of Christ church GV II Wall with 2 gate-ways and gates. Probably 1819, as Church (q.v). Coursed squared stone, ashlar, cast and wrought iron. Wall approximately 1 metre high on south side and rising to approximately 3 metres on west side has chamfered ashlar coping and supports railings with spear-finialed bars and intermediate scrolled brackets. At north end of west wall is an ashlar pier and a composite ashlar terminal pier both with pyramidal capstones. The 2 gateways in the south walls have monolithic ashlar piers each having tall base with sunk pointed-arch panels, a narrower stage with broad chamfer forming octagonal section, octagonal band and gableted capstone. Gates have 2 leafs with plain spear-finialed bars, mid-rails of quartrefoils, and hinge bars set in iron sockets set in stone cills. To each gateway an elaborate overthrow with scrolled brackets and finialed bars. Included for group value.
