3/93 Swallowshaw and attached barn (formerly listed as Swallowshaw Farmhouse and 22.11.66 adjoining Barn)

G.V. II*

House and attached barn. Dated 1663. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys double pile. 2-room front with through passage backing onto hearth in lower range with outshut to rear, to which is attached the barn. All parts are contemporary or very close in date. South front has double chamfered mullioned windows of 4 lights with same over, and 6-light window with king mullions and 2-light fire-window to housebody, with added 2 lights between. Over is 6-light window with king mullion. Doorway has Tudor-arched lintel bearing date within a tressure and composite jambs with moulded surround. Over are 2 moulded corbels carrying gutter; these match the kneelers on coped gables. Single stack to eastern gable. Aisle of barn breaks forward, has quoined angles and tall doorway with square lintel and chamfered surround set within a portal. Mistal doorway has square lintel, composite jambs and chamfered surround over which are 2 moulded corbels carrying gutter. Kneelers to gable. Rear has similar cart entry protected by oversailing eaves carried on a beam with ½ lap joints supported by triple corbel. Similar doorway to mistal in aisle. To rear of through passage is outshut under cat slide roof with doorway with Tudor-arched lintel and chamfered surround. Double chamfered mullioned windows to ground floor of 6 lights and 11 lights with king mullion; (division wall between housebody and parlour is attached to king mullion). Interior: Original doorway from through passage into barn. Reeded spine beams and joists. Scarf joints to spine beams of housebody indicate former bressumer replaced by large early C18 fireplace, with slightly corbelled jambs, moulded surround and carved lintel. Several arch-headed doorways. A fine example of a yeoman clothier's house, retaining its original fenestration. It is unusual in having a doorway into the barn leading from the through passage; this is in the long-house tradition.
