Mill school with playground wall to front and side. 1871 for Messrs Duncan (mill
owners). Rock-faced stone, Welsh slate roof. In Gothic style. Single storey
9 bays, the 2 left bays projecting as gabled wing. Offset buttress. Wing: gabled
porch on right has diagonal buttresses and steps up to 6-panel double door with
fan-light in pointed-arched surround of 2 orders on colonnettes. On left of porch,
window of 3 triangular- headed lights with colonnettes and relieving arch.
Sexfoiled oculus in gable. Rest of range in rhythm a,b,a,b,a,b,a, the'a' bays
each having a window of 2 segmental-arched lights with colonnette, the 'b' bays
gabled and each having a pointed-arched window of 2 cusped lights with colonnette and
sexfoil over. All gables have kneelers, roll-moulded coping and leafy finials.
Crested ridge tiles, partly broken, and remnants of 2 ridge louvres. Rear: short
wing projects on right; windows of 2 triangular-headed lights to bays 1,2,6 and 7;
gabled range added to bay 4/5; between this and bay 3, eaves stack with 2 small
slate louvred pointed-arched openings in base. Right return: window of 2 cusped
lights with sexfoil over. Left return: 4 bays, windows as rear and separated by
buttresses. Running along front of school is tall wall with chamfered coping
supporting railings with decorative base band and alternately plain and moulded
finials to bars; wide, intermediate, stone piers. Wall returns on left as tall
wall between school and alley.
