27th May 1960 [formerly listed as
"The Nookin" (No.48)]

- II*

House. now offices. Probably C16, but dated 1611 on bressumer of front
gable; altered. Rendered stone at ground floor, with timber frame above (and
internally), stone slate roof. T-plan: linear 3-unit range with projecting
wing to centre, (perhaps an addition). Two storeys; plinth, ground floor
walls coped with stone, close-studded box frame at 1st floor; gable of front
wing has passing braces at the corners, king-post truss with 7 pairs of
V-struts, bressumer inscribed "EDRUS TAILOR T I.T. 1611. APR.10",
altered window at ground floor, 4-light window at 1st floor with altered
glazing, and an apex finial to the front gable; return walls of this wing
have similar passing braces and small framed-in windows; roof is gabled at
the rear, with gable chimney. Main range front walls and left gables
similarly timber-framed, except that gable trusses have 3 pairs of A-struts
(suggesting that this range is earlier than the front wing); right-hand gable
wall has an external chimney stack. Rear mostly altered, but there is a
massive external chimney stack to the 1st unit, and a small chamfered window
at ground floor beside this.

Interior: most of timber frame visible, including 2 closed frames in the main
range, which have king-post trusses with 2 pairs of A-struts, and scored
carpenter's marks (1st frame altered,leaving vacant mortices for angle-braces
and studs); left end has 2 longitudinal beams with ovolo moulding; in the
same part, a very large arched stone fireplace; Tudor-arched stone fireplaces
on both floors of front wing, another backed to that at ground floor of
middle unit, and a 4th at the right-hand end of the main range; former
external doorway in rear wall now enclosed by later addition.
