9/19 The Old Post House

G.V. II

Hall house, now cottage. C15 altered C20. Timber frame with painted brick infilling, old tile gabled roof. Rectangular plan of 4 framed bays. 2 storeys. Rectangular chimney stack with diagonal pilasters to left of ridge centre. Scattered C19 leaded casement windows. Original 4-centred moulded door frame facing road but now enclosed in C20 hipped lean-to porch facing road. Interior:- contains a very fine timber frame, redundant crown post roof, long curved windbraces and large C17 inglenook chimney inserted in former screens passage, service end on left. Carpenters marks in correct sequence, scribed with a race tool with a circular symbol which is unusual for Berkshire.
