3/75 Yew Tree Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. C15 origin, C17 rear additions, early C18 alterations to east wing and interior, C19 and C20 alterations. Rubble, rendered, right return painted, double Roman tiled hipped roof with off-centre stack, pantiled roofs to rear. Through passage, U-plan. 2 storeys and 3 windows, at first floor all 4-pane sashes in exposed boxes, ground floor left plate-glass sash, to right sash with thick glazing bars, both with wedge-shaped head and keystone, central panelled and glazed door with triangular hood. Right return has buttress to left, small 12-pane sash at ground floor right and C20 window at first floor; rear wing to right, originally single storey, with later upper floor, has 4-light C20 window at ground floor and raking dormer above, ridge stack with oven projection, attached outhouse at end of wing with C19 3-light casement. Left return has 2-light casement at ground floor, straight joint up to first floor level to rear wing to left, with 2 sashes in exposed boxes at ground floor of wing, first floor has 2-light and single light casement under eaves; rear of wing has 2 small 4-pane lights with round heads and relieving arch, 2-light casement at first floor. Rear has covered area between 2 wings, rear through passage door with strap hinges, wing to right has glazed door, wing to left has panelled and glazed door to outhouse, 3-light casement and door with timber lintel to kitchen. Interior: front rooms right and left have deep-chamfered beams, to left supported on pier, room to right has C18 cupboard in recess with shaped shelves, modified winder stair to rear right of passage; room to rear left altered in C18 as parlour, has boxed heam, deep recess to each side of fireplace with moulded round-headed arch. At first floor, 2 cruck trusses are visible at the back, boxed and cut off at front, 3 cruck trusses in all, cambered collars, purlins, smoke-blackened. For further information see sources.
