2/48 Belgrave Lodge Gates, Piers and Wing Walls

GV II

Pair of gates with piers and wing walls, 1889, by John Douglas for 1st Duke of Westminster. Of wrought and cast iron and stone. Each gate has the Westminster initial and ducal coronet with heraldic roses as central motif in a panel of plain vertical rails within an ornate surround. Spiked dogbars at base. Scrollwork, some with leaf terminals, at sides and floral and leaf pattern at top of gates. Square stone piers with recessed corners, projecting moulded plinths and classical moulded projecting capitals, surmounted by talbot dogs rampant, bearing shields. The north shield bears a cross; the south shield a Grosvenor sheaf. Wing walls (all in yellow sandstone, with consoles to piers) enclose a deep rectangular grassed forecourt. Rear walls (on plane with gates) have shaped copings and piers with stone ball finials. Plain stone side walls to forecourt, with flush copings, open towards Wrexham Road with convex quadrant wings.
