LOFTUS SOUTH TOWN LANE NZ 71 NW (off west side), Loftus. 1/69 Nos. 1 and 2 Handale Abbey Cottages. (Formerly listed as Handale 20.1.67 Farmhouse). - II Farmhouse and farm cottage adjoining left, early/mid C18, with outhouses adjoining left and right ends c.1800. Now 2 cottages; dressed sandstone, coursed rubble with quoins to outhouse at left; brick outhouse at right. Clay pantile roofs with stone ridge and gable copings and block kneelers. Stacks rebuilt in brick with stone caps. 2 storeys, 2 plus 2 windows. Original doorway, between farmhouse and cottage, now holds late C20 door. Mid/late C19 doorway with late C20 door between bays in farmhouse. Late C20 casements in original openings. Late C19 opening with sash inserted above original doorway. Stone sills, keyed lintels on first floor of farmhouse. Steeply-pitched roof, sprocketed at eaves. Ridge and end stacks. Single-storey outhouses. Garret lights in returns of farmhouse and cottage. Mid C20 lean-to rear wing and c.1900 brick outbuilding adjoining right-hand outhouse are not of special interest. Farm outbuildings to south are too much altered to be of special interest.
