CROSBY GARRETT Smardalegill Viaduct over Scandal Beck.

GV II*

Railway viaduct. Completed 1860 for South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway; Thomas Bouch engineer (?) , contractor Wrigg of Preston. Rough - hewn sandstone blocks with dressed arch soffits. 90ft high (mdx.) & c. 550ft long with 14 semi-circular arches, each spanning c.30 ft. Tapered piers; battered pilasters to abutments. Cornice carries parapet, c.2 ft high; track bed c.25 ft wide.

Crosses parish boundary with WAITBY.
