Boundary Stone at Northfield
II
Boundary stone. Possibly Anglo-Saxon or earlier, but re-set. Large upright rough
stone in limestone or conglomerate, surface much pitted; c.1.25 m high, and up to
500 mm wide and 300 mm thick, coming roughly to a peak. Bears bronze plate with
inscription: THIS MARKER STONE BELIEVED TO BE OF ANGLO-SAXON AND PROBABLY PREHISTORIC
ORIGIN STANDS IN THE VICINITY OF THE ANCIENT BOUNDARY OF THE BERKELEY HUNDRED AND THE
LANGLEY AND SWYNESHEAD HUNDRED. The stone was recovered from beneath the highway and
reinstated in its present position by Avon County Council in 1984.
