CROSBY GARRETT,
Crosby Mill Cottage

II

Former house, now (May 1989) used for storage. Early C18 with later alterations. Random (and some coursed) local rubble; diminishing Westmorland slate
roof. 2-unit plan with lean-to outshut added to SE when roof raised. Single
storey with loft. End elevations show clear evidence of heightening (to east)
and rebuilding (to west). North side: large doorway under irregular stone arch,
partially blocked; 2 other ground floor windows, one blocked, the other
reduced. 1st floor with 2 windows, one rebated with evidence of a mullion (now
removed). South side: blocked doorway (opposing that to north); lean-to outshut
with quoining. Interior: fireplace with corbelled lintel (stone), now containing C19 range. Small fireplace above; 1st floor supported by chamfered cross
beams. Roof: C19 rafters; 2 trusses, the principals with curved feet (a cruck
derivative), morticed and pegged at apex, halved collar, back purlins; a third
truss with principals and tie, all pegged and of good quality. Site of stairs
in outshut. Planked stalls remain from the period when building used as a
byre. Although considerably altered, the care of this building appears early
and it has changed little since the mid C19.
