5/91 Lime Kiln
-
GV II
Lime kiln. Probably built in 1812, with few later alterations. Slatestone rubble
with brick dressings.
Plan: Large square plan lime kiln, with the front directly on to the beach and the
slipway on to the beach running along the right side. The lime kiln is built into
the bank at the rear, for loading to the kilns at the top. The top is filled in.
Exterior: The front facing the beach is blind. The right side faces Canton, and has
two round-arched openings with brick dressings and C20 plank door. The left side and
rear have no openings.
In 1812, John Pill leased a plot of land to Richard Nicholls for building a lime kiln
and lime house.
