SOUTH HILL SW 36 NW 7/223 Caddapit II
House and barn, now house. Circa mid C16. Lower end on south probably rebuilt circa mid C18, converted to barn and in mid to late C20 converted back to private dwelling. Right-hand side extended circa mid to late C20. Stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends with slightly higher roof to house on right. Stone rubble stack to left of centre. Rendered front lateral hall stack to C16 range and rendered brick stack on right-hand gable end in C20 extension. Plan; hall retained on right with inner room extended in C20. Staircase projection to rear of hall. To left, lower end rebuilt. Through passage between hall and lower end on left re-introduced in late C20. 2 storeys, asymmetrical 6-window front. Hardwood C20 casements with rounded-heads. C20 door in gabled C20 porch. Right-hand range set forward with large granite quoins. Similar C20 casements. 2 on ground floor and 2 on first. C20 extension to right set back. Interior; hall probably open. Floor inserted in circa mid C17. Fireplace to front lateral stack probably partly rebuilt timber lintel with very slight chamfer. Cloam oven within smoking chamber to right. 2 heavily chamfered half beams at upper and lower end of hall with run-out stops. Partly carried by 2 corbelled brackets projecting from dividing walls. Central ceiling beam with heavy chamfer with ogee stops. Intermediate ceiling beams slight with series of scratch moulds running along grain. All ceiling beams running in same direction. Circa early C17 door frames to staircase projection and to inner room beyond hall; oak with 4-centred arch. Mortice and tenoned. Inner room with heavy chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops and slight intermediate beams with scratch moulds. Staircase projection to rear of hall in north-west corner. Stone rubble winder stairs with slate treads. At top of stairs to right, very fine circa C16 oak door with linen-fold panelling. Room above hall with 2 raised cruck trusses. Heavy curved principals, chamfered to collar level. Cambered, chamfered collars, 1 dovetailed into principal. Trenched purlins. Apex hidden by plaster ceiling above collar level. The roof timbers have recently been cleared and stained. In apex of gable at lower end of hall, small blocked opening forming niche. Possibly smoke-hole. Room to north with small granite fireplace in north gable end. Chamfered lintel and jambs.
