Details

SX 25 NW DULOE Stocks Cottage 3/13 - II

House, now empty. Circa early to mid C17. Stone rubble with corrugated iron roof with gable ends. Lower ridge to higher range on right. Large projecting stone rubble chimney stacks on gable ends. Probably 2 room and through passage plan with kitchen in lower range on left and parlour in slightly smaller room at higher end on right. Original position of stair possibly at higher end to front of right-hand fireplace to gable end. Entrance probably altered with tiny blocked door in opening to left of present entrance with doorframe possibly reset. On the rear elevation, straight joints indicate position of rear door of through passage. 2 storeys, asymmetrical 2-window front. Ground floor with partly blocked opening on left, timber lintel over blocked entrance to left of centre, entrance to right of centre and window overgrown with ivy to right. First floor with 2, partly blocked window openings, one on left and other to right of entrance. 2 circa C17 window openings on ground and first floor in left-hand gable end, to right of projecting stack. On rear elevation, 3-light C17 timber mullion window on ground floor and remains of C17 2-light timber mullion window on first floor. Low stone rubble walls of lean-to outshut on right-hand gable end with entrance leading through from parlour to rear of right end stack. Interior with lime plastered walls. Low doorframe to blocked door on left only visible from within; outer rectangular timber frame with circa C17 chamfered inner timber frame. The jambs and lintel are chamfered on the inner side possibly indicating resiting and re-orientation of the frame. The jambs have been morticed into the lintel and shaped to form a rounded arch. The left-hand jamb has been partly removed. The kitchen, passage and lower end of parlour have slate paved floors with chamfered ceiling beams. Ceiling beams to parlour replaced in circa Cl9. Through passage altered and blocked to rear. Stair inserted to left of passage with small room between stair and screen. Parlour and kitchen fireplaces partly blocked. Step down into kitchen. First floor with 2 circa C17 fireplaces in gable-ends. Roof of 5 bays. Truss one at lower end on south, circa C17 with cambered collars with dovetailed, notched and lapped joints and principals with slightly curved feet. Truss two was originally open and is probably C17, possibly closed in C18 below the cambered collar with vertically studded lath and plaster screen. Truss three, circa C18 with collar missing, slightly blackened, possibly staining and originally closed. Trusses one, two and three originally had trenched purlins. Truss four, circa late C18 with lapped and oak pegged collars. The cottage provides a good example in elevation and plan of an unspoilt circa early C17 2 room and through passage plan house.
