BOTUS FLEMING SX 36 SE 5/10 Swiftaford Farmhouse II Farmhouse, now house. Probably early-mid C17, with additions of circa C18 and C19 and alterations of C20. Rendered stone rubble. Scantle slate and slate roof, partly slurried, with ridge tiles, some hand-made crested ridge tiles surviving, and gable ends; gable end stack to right, rendered, with slate weathering and shaped top, similar axial stack to hall, gable end stack to left with brick shaft. Plan: 2-room plan, with the lower end room to right heated by a gable end stack; cross passage, possibly originally a through passage. Hall to left, heated by an axial stack backing on to the passage, and with a stair tower to the rear of the hall. The gable end stack to left appears to be a later addition and may heat the chamber over the hall. Probably in the later C17, a gabled bay was added to the front of the hall. An outshut for a dairy was added to the rear of the passage and the lower end room. Probably circa C18, a 2-storey stable was added to the lower right end, and probably later in the C19 a 2-storey stable/outhouse was added to the higher left end. Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front; all windows are C20 2-light casements. Lower end to right has door with glazed panel and slate hood, casement with granite lintel to right at ground floor and 2 casements above. To left, ground and first floor 2-light casement. The gabled bay to left has 2-light casement at ground and first floor, slate-hung at the apex of the gable. Attached to right, the stable, in rubble, with 2 doors and one window at ground floor and one loading door to the loft above. Stable attached to left with door, C20 window and C20 porch; now part of the house. Attached to the left end of the stable, a small C19 stone rubble addition with hipped roof and door and single light with brick dressing. At the rear, there is a C20 window in the stable to left. The rear of the hall has a 2-storey gabled stair tower with C19 2-light casement with 3 panes each light and L hinges; 2- light casement at ground floor to right. The rear of the lower end has single storey outshut with C20 window. The rear of the stable to left has a C19 single storey addition with 2 doors and one window. Interior: In the passage, there is an C18 2-panelled door leading to the rear dairy outshut; the dairy has slate floor and slate shelves. The lower end room to right is ceiled, with rebuilt fireplace with granite lintel. The hall has chamfered and step- stopped beams, with a keeping hole in the hall bay. The hall bay has similar beams; C17 bench with shaped support brackets. Fireplace probably partly rebuilt, with C20 granite lintel and oven to rear left. Stair tower has winder stair. Boxed beams of first floor.
