LOSTWITHIEL SX 16 SW 4/54 Restormel Manor - II

Farmhouse. Mid-late C17, with later stair tower, remodelled internally in early C18, with stair of mid C18; late C18 refronting, with C19 additions to rear left and rear right. Some later alterations. Slatestone rubble, rendered with granite dressings, slate-hung porch. Slate roofs, hipped over end 2 bays to left and right, with brick ridge stacks. The original house was probably of 3 rooms with through passage, with upper end to right and one room in the lower end to left; the porch may be original, with alterations during the refronting. 2 rooms to right heated by back to back fireplaces in an axial stack, the room to left possibly originally had gable end fireplace, extended in the refronting to 2 rooms to left, also heated by back to back fireplaces. The stair tower is to the rear right of the passage, and a new stair was inserted in the stair tower in the mid C18. Late C18 refronting and extensions to left made a symmetrical facade, with the end two bays to right and left slightly advanced. Probably at this time, a 2-storey wing was built to rear left, and in the mid C19, a passage was formed along the rear right, inside the original external wall, with access to service rooms along the rear right. 2 storeys, 2:2:1:2:2 bays, on granite plinth, with granite embattled parapet, end 2 bays left and right advanced, with central 3-storey slate-hung and embattled porch. The porch has 2-centred arched chamfered granite doorway, with studded double doors, with Gothic tracery toplights; granite piers with 4-centred arch. 12-pane sash with 4-centred arch over at first and 2nd floor. The rest of the front has 12-pane sashes at ground floor, at first floor inner bays to left and right of porch have 9-pane sashes set in 4-centred arched heads. Right side rendered, with 12-pane sash at ground and first floor to right. Attached to left, a curtain wall about 5 metres long, embattled, with 2-centred arched chamfered doorway. Left side not rendered. Rear has 2-storey wing to right with roof hipped, with 6-pane light at ground floor to inner side and 2-light hipped dormer. Set in the angle to the main range, single storey C19 addition with hipped roof, with 16-pane sash and door to side. To left, a single storey C20 addition with 3 windows, and. above a 3-light casement under the eaves. To left, the stair tower, originally gabled, and extended in the later C19 from the left side, with sash of 6 panes and plate glass at first floor. Along the left end, 2 storey C19 addition for service rooms, with porch, door, 2-light casement, C20 door and 6-pane light at ground floor; first floor has 12-pane sash, two 2-light casements with timber lintels and tall 12-pane sash; hipped roof. Interior Not fully accessible. The stair tower has a fine mid C18 open well stair, with turned and knopped balusters set three to each tread, ramped handrail and carved string; the ceiling over the stair well has egg and dart and dentil cornice, with central rose, with earlier plasterwork, probably of C17, remaining on the soffit of the rear wall; this has strapwork hearts and flowers pattern. At first floor, all 2- panelled doors with HL hinges. The porch has an inner doorway in granite, with 4- centred arch, wave moulded with pyramid stops, Gothic glazed door. The rear of the passage has Gothic half-glazed door. In the roof, there are 3 trusses remaining over the room to left of the passage; straight principal rafters, pegged at the apices with a saddle, with cambered collars pegged to the faces of the principals. Rest of roof of C19 and later. The roof is open to the left end beyond the ridge stack to left, so the house may originally have been of 4-room plan, with 2 rooms to each side of the passage.
