2/50 Gates and piers west of
Haughton Hall
GV II
Main entrance gates to Haughton Hall, circa 1891. Sandstone piers and
cast iron gates. Large square piers set diagonally to the gates and
consisting of six ashlar blocks built off an ogee moulded stone
plinth. The sixth blocks are incised on four faces, two with rosette
and foliage, one with a festoon and the fourth with shield and
heraldic treatment. The projecting pier caps are ogee and ovolo
moulded and support ball finials. The gates which are fixed to angles
of the piers, are of square bar construction with fleur-de-lis,
scrolls, leaves, spikes and large lyre-like features. The overthrow
sits on a metal panel built-up from square bars, roundels and scrolls
and consists mainly of scrollwork and leaves.
