6/11 The Church of St Oswald
II
Parish Church, circa 1892, in polygonal rubble with tiled roof. Cruciform plan with 2-bay nave, transepts and slightly narrower 2-bay chancel and choir. In lancet style. South nave entrance door of pine with ornamental strap hinges in porch with gothic arch and steeply pitched roof. Weathered sill band to windows which are stone dressed, mainly lancet but with bull's eyes surmounting those grouped under single arches. There are trefoil sinkings below the transept windows. Hexagonal bell turret, over the crossing, with short carved timber posts to opening of bellchamber and steep cedar shingle clad roof, with metal cross finial. There are also metal cross finials to the gables of the chancel, nave and transepts. Interior: The risers of the three steps up to the altar are inscribed respectively "I will wash my hands in innocency", "And so will I go to thine altar O Lord" and "Holy Holy Holy". The Sanctuary has a mosaic floor and is flanked south by a two trefoil arched sedilia and fronted by carved oak choir stalls with poppyheads. The organ chamber is on the north wall behind the choir stalls. A low stone wall, topped by a brass ornamental rail, based on scrolls and leaves and finished with brattishing, separates the choir from the nave. There is a pair of matching brass gates and two steps up from the nave with risers inscribed "Go your way into his gates with Thanksgiving". The pulpit is a circular pulvinated stone rail with foliage motif supported by seven shafts, with rings and foliage caps, off a solid overhanging base. The baptismal font, at the west end of the nave, is a stone chalice, on a cruciform base, with the inscription "A well of water springing up into everlasting life". The north transept window is a memorial to Baron William Henry Schroder of Rookery Hall, Worleston, whereas the south transept window features four biblical characters. Two small brasses and a slate wall memorials. High collar arch braced trusses with horseshoe braces above collar. Diagonally crossed trusses support the bell turret. Angel corbels support the chancel arch. Exposed rafters and ashlar pieces with plaster in between.
