off SOUTH PARADE 1. 1164 (east side) SE 0924 NE Great Northern Shed 19/400 2. Railway engine shed. Built 1885 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire and Great Northern Railway Companies. Dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. 2 storey curved east front 10 bays, each bay topped by a shallow gable with a pilaster between and a thick first floor band. The ground floor has a pair of metal frame glazing bar windows to each bay. North front 5 bays, with engine openings below, one masked by a single storey office wing with chimney stack, and above 5 metal frame glazing bar windows, one replaced by a fire door. The west front, 10 bays, also topped by shallow gables with pilasters between and a thick first floor band. The ground floor has a pair of metal frame glazing bar windows to each bay, with above the scar of the original engine canopy and above again pairs of segment headed metal frame windows. South front 5 bays , with single window then 3 engine openings, and then to the right a 2 storey 4-bay office wing.
N.B.The building referred to in this schedule is The Great Northern Shed, off South Parade, Halifax ( NGR SE 0924 NE ) On 18th February 1991 this building was added to the 70th list of Buildings of Special architectural or historic interest in the City of Bradford in error. The building has now been deleted from the 70th list in the City of Bradford.
