GV II
House: Early C18 origins, rebuilt c1780. Flemish bond red-brick with
purple headers on buff sandstone plinth from an earlier house.
Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge and 3 brick chimneys.
3-storey, 3-bay front. Fluted stone frieze under projecting cornice.
Central bay projects slightly and has 12-pane sashes under segmental
rough brick heads with 6-pane sash in top storey. Left end bay has
pairs of 12-pane sashes under broad segmental heads with a pair of
6-pane sashes in the top storey. Similar in right end bay, but for
door behind C20 glass and brick porch. Broad elliptical gauged and
rubbed brick headed doorcase over fanlight with diamond shaped
tracery. Door has 8 lozenge-shaped moulded panels and is flanked by
engaged Ionic columns. To rear wall is in sandstone rubble and has
traces of earlier C18 windows.
Interior: Moulded elliptical openings, fluted surrounds with rosettes
in the corners to 6-panelled doors; Georgian spiral staircase with
square balusters and open string with carved acorns.
Home of the Antrobuses who had a silk mill adjacent and later
Lowerhouse Mill (q.v.) all sold to Samual Greg jnr.
One storey C20 extension to the left not of special interest.
