House, formerly girls' school, 1860's, altered. Brown brick; clay tile roof. 2 storeys plus attic; slightly projecting front gable to right has 1 replaced window per storey in chamfered openings; plain bands at 1st and 2nd floors. 2-storey left wing has a 3-light brick-mullioned window to each storey. Left end faces open garden-court, with entrance to house in porch expressed as a broad, shallow buttress containing boarded door in round-arched opening with moulded stone imposts and red-brick voussoirs; picturesque massing behind the porch comprising 2-storey square bay window; square chimney on ridge of cross-gable with zig-zig brick infill to recesses between flues; bold and tall shaped lateral chimney at rear corner of left wing; 1-storey rear wing, formerly the school-room. Providence House forms an attractive group with Providence Cottage and No. 42 Church Street around a garden court open to the street. Interior: No features of special interest. Listed for group value.
