Details
STAINTON AND THORNTON ROAD, NZ 41 SE (4813) THORNTON east side.
5/128 Boundary wall, gates and gatepiers of 23.6.66 Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. G.V. II 2 pairs of gatepiers, mid/late C17; boundary/retaining wall, C18 and early C19; and late C19 gates. Dressed sandstone, and iron gates. Wall, with chamfered copings, encloses north and west sides of churchyard. North gatepiers have plain bases and shafts, entablature caps with bolection-moulded frieze and ball-on-stem finials. 2-leaf gates have diamond vertical bars, the end bars with urn finials; similar plain pedestrian gate, at right, with short plain piers. West gatepiers similar, but with ogee-domed caps; up 6 steps. Similar 2-leaf gates. HISTORY: gatepiers may have been removed here from Thornton Hall, demolished c.1800. Brick wall adjoining west gatepiers, is not of special interest.
