Bank, 1912 by T.B. Whinney (London) and J. Forbes (Middlesbrough), for
London City and Midland Bank. Brick, faced with sandstone ashlar. Lakeland
slate roof; copper-roofed lantern; flat asphalt-roofed wing. Occupies
corner site. Edwardian Classical style. 2 storeys, 4 bays. Entered from
slightly-recessed chamfered left corner bay. Deep plinth. Panelled
pilasters, with enriched escutcheons at heads, flank altered late C20
glazing and doors. Blank right end bay. Continuous late C20 fascia sign
applied to frieze under modillion cornice between floors. First and 3rd
bays on first floor have canted 3-light bay windows, with Composite
pilasters between lights, and plain frieze and cornice over middle lights.
Renewed glazing. Shaped brackets support soffit of deep overhanging eaves.
Sprocketed hipped and gabled roof has 3 flat-roofed dormers with late C20
glazing in corniced surrounds. Corniced transverse stack at right end.
Corner bay has late C20 doors and fanlight in panelled coved surround, with
plain pilasters and acanthus keystone. First-floor canted oriel, on
acanthus consoles and plain cyma-reversa oversailing, has similar window
under pediment. Tall octagonal lantern, rising from eaves has keyed
round-headed openings and moulded impost bands, in alternate faces.
Inverted consoles at bases of other faces. Heavily-moulded cornice and
ogee-domed roof with shaped finial. Similar 2-bay left return has
slightly-projecting panelled and corniced stack between bays. One-storey,
one-bay rear wing with deep parapet. Late C20 right extension not of
special interest.
