Details

The following building shall be added to the list:-

SX 88 NE DUNCHIDEOCK

Rustic bridge in the woodland about 3/103 10 metres north east of Haldon Gate -

GV II

Bridge, originally carrying woodland path over pool, pool now overgrown. Probably late C18 and associated with Lawrence Tower (qv) built in 1788 for Sir Robert Palk to commemorate Major General Stringer Lawrence. The bridge appears to have been part of a rustic walk in the woods below the C18 Gothick tower. Flint construction. Single span picturesque bridge with a rounded arch with roughly-dressed voussoirs and flint parapets. Maps show a series of winding tracks through the woodlands round Lawrence Tower: one pathway, the Kings Road, links Lawrence Tower to the remains of Haldon House and the bridge is probably part of a Romantic woodland walk.
