CALSTOCK LATCHLEY SX 47 SW 2/116 Latchley Farmhouse 15.4.87 II Farmhouse, now house. Early - mid C17, with later C17 additions ; enlarged circa early C18, with C19 and later alterations. Rendered stone rubble. Main roof in slate with ridge tiles, one hand-made crested ridge tile surviving ; gable ends, with gable end stacks, stack to right clustered and weathered, stack to left weathered, both with rubble shafts. Hipped scantle slate roof to the front range, with axial stack with rendered shaft. Plan: Originally a large 2-room plan, with a hall/kitchen to left and a parlour to right, each room heated from a gable end stack. There appears to have been no passage, with entrance directly into the hall kitchen. Later in the C17, a stair tower was added to the rear of the hall, and a single storey dairy added to the rear of the parlour, with access from a doorway at the rear right of the hall. Probably in the early C18, an unheated addition of one-room plan was added to the front of the hall, with a loft over ; this was entered from a door at the right side ; late in the C18, this doorway was enclosed in a lateral passage, along the front of the house, leaving the main door as an external door, and an addition of 2-room plan was added to the front. This incorporated part of the early building, visible in a joint at the left side of the front range and footings remaining. The addition was of 2-room plan, each room heated from back-to-back fireplaces from the axial stack. The room to left was entered from the front and the room to right from the rear; these may have been used as a pair of one-room plan houses. In the C19, the hall/kitchen was partitioned to form a through passage, and on apple loft added over the dairy to rear right. In C20, the original front door was enclosed in a porch at the right side. Exterior: The main range is to rear, only the parlour end to right visible ; this is 2-storey, with 3-light C20 casement at ground floor, and two 2-light casements in raking dormers above. The right gable end has C20 window at first floor to right. The dairy is to right, with C20 window with slate cill at ground floor, small loading door above to the apple loft. The left gable end has external stack, with curved oven at the base visible inside the lateral corridor. The rear of the main range has C20 2-light casement to the apple loft and small single storey C20 addition to rear of the dairy. Door to the side of the dairy. The stair tower is to right, with pitched roof forming a catslide with the roof of the main range, 9-pane light to rear. The upper end to right has C20 metal-framed window at ground and first floor. The C18 front range is of 2 storeys, and 4 windows, a symmetrical front, with all windows C20 metal-framed casements. At ground floor is a half-glazed C20 door to left, with window to right ; at the right end are 2 windows. The right side is blind. To right is the C20 lean-to enclosing the original front door. At the left there is a 2-storey lean-to to rear of the C18 range, with 4-pane light at ground and first floor. The wall is stopped, with footings remaining from an earlier building. Interior: The rear range has front door with granite cill, pintles remaining from earlier door. The rear door also has pintles remaining, both doors with a rounded wooden arch inserted within the frame. The parlour to right has roughly hewn beams, which appear sooted, possibly re-used, and the fireplace rebuilt in C20. Stud partition wall between the parlour and the main room. The hall/kitchen to left has a C19 wooden partition wall, creating an angled passage, as the rear door is not directly opposite the front door. The hall has replaced beams, the fireplace at the gable end blocked. Rear stair tower has C19 wooden newel stair. The dairy to rear right has been partitioned, and has keeping holes. On the first floor, the apple loft has an C18 plank door with strap hinges. The room over the parlour has early C18 2- panelled door with LH hinges. Boxed feet of principal rafters visible at first floor, roof space not accessible. In the front range, the fireplaces have cloam oven, and the room to right retains a wooden mantel. The walls in the front range have lime mortar.
