CALSTOCK SX 47 SW 2/50 0akenhayes House 23.1.68 II House. Originally of circa Cl7, in two builds ; re-oriented and enlarged in early C18, with C19 and C20 alterations. Slatestone rubble, partly painted, with granite dressings. Slate roof, hipped over the front range, with stacks with brick shafts to rear right and left. The rear range is partly in asbestos slate, with gable end to rear with gable end stack with rubble shaft, truncated. Plan: The rear range is the early building, and appears to be one room heated by a rear lateral stack ; this may be the remains of a formerly larger building. At the left end, an addition of one-room plan was made, probably in late C17, heated from a gable end stack. This range faces south ; in the early C18, the house was re- oriented, to face east, with a new range of 2-room plan, each room heated from a rear lateral stack, and with a central entrance hall. A stair tower was added to rear left, in the angle with the early range, and an addition of one-room plan was made to rear right, probably as a kitchen, with entrance at the right side, with a well. There was also a dairy addition, unheated, to the right side of the early C18 range. Exterior: The early C18 front is of 2 storeys, a symmetrical 3-bay front with heavy moulded eaves cornice pediment, dressed granite plinth and rusticated pilasters, dressed granite band course. Ground floor has central panelled and glazed door with rusticateed granite pilasters, voussoirs and keystone. First floor has central round-arched niche with granite hood mould and keystone. 12-pane sash with thick glazing bars in exposed box with moulded granite cill at ground and first floor to left and right. At the apex of the gable is a blind lunette with moulded granite cill and keystone. Set back to left, the single storey lean-to has similar 12-pane sash to front. The right side has single storey rubble lean-to with door and window. At the left side, the early range has the stair addition to right ; first floor has 2 C20 windows. At the right side, in the angle to the C18 range is a C20 porch and a round-arched casement at first floor. The C18 addition is of 3 storeys, with C20 window at ground and first floor and C19 2-light casement at 2nd floor. Attached to right is 2-storey lean-to with C20 window at ground and first floor. The gable end of the range has external stack. Interior: In the early C18 range, the front door has HL hinges and diagonal battens. The room to left has 2-panelled door and panelled shutters to window ; fireplace altered C20. The room to right has a cupboard to left of the chimneypiece and on the right wall carved brackets. Chimneypiece with eared architrave and moulded mantel. Shutters to window. The stair tower has a dog-leg stair with fine Chinoiserie panels and moulded handrail. In the rear range, the door at the right side, inside the C20 porch has a granite carved figure as keystone, probably a re- used early C17 piece. The door to the one-room addition is panelled and has a letterbox, originally an external door. The well has a round slatestone arch with granite keystone, pump remaining. In the one-room addition the fireplace has a segmental brick arch with granite keystone and springers, formerly had oven to left. The end room to rear has gabled end fireplace with roughly chamfered timber lintel and granite linted oven to left. On the first floor in the early C18 range, the room to left has chimneypiece with pulvinated frieze and moulded mantel, cupboard to left with brackets. All 2-panelled doors at first floor. The roof is continuous over the front C18 range and the middle room in the rear, of early C18 with crossed and pegged principal rafters, slightly trenched purlins and collars pegged to the principals. The end room in the rear range has a C19 roof.
