Details

CALSTOCK SX 4268-4368 9/34 Barn about 25 metres south east of Cotehele House GV I Barn. Probably late C15 with addition probably of C16 - C17 and later alterations including C20 restoration. Slatestone and granite rubble with granite dressings. Slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Plan: The barn is in 2 builds, with the 3 bays to left earliest, with the rear at lower ground level. Attached to right is the later addition, with central doorway to front and rear. Single storey addition at the right end. Exterior: The first barn has a 3-bay front, divided by weathered ashlar buttresses ; central 4-light granite window, hollow-chamfered, probably a later insertion. To right and left a 4-centred arched granite doorway with moulded surround, the one to right with a dripstone. Ventilation slit at upper level to left. The range to right has a wide 4-centred arched granite doorway, chamfered and stopped, with ventilation slit to right and left. Large granite quoins. The left gable end has a weathered diagonal buttress to left ; ground floor has 2- light chamfered granite window, with ventilation slit above. Attached to rear left is a short screen wall and small single storey addition with gable end, 2 doors and C20 window on inner side. Attached to the right gable end is a small single storey addition with 2 C20 doors to front and a lean-to at the rear. The rear of the first barn has the granite quoins remaining at the junction with the later building; one weathered buttress to right. Central double doors and external stair to left leading to double doors to the loft, with a continuous pitched hood over a 2-light casement to left. Upper level also has two 2-light casements to right of the loft door. Ground floor has C20 casement to right and left of the stair, set in earlier openings with timber lintels remaining. To left is a 4-centred arched granite doorway, chamfered, with shuttered window opening above. To the right, the barn has been altered as 3 bays, with central door at ground floor and 2-light casement to right and left, all with stone segmental heads ; at first floor three 2- light windows with shutters. The later building to left has a tall central 4-centred arched granite doorway (replaced C20) C20 window to right and left and door to end left. Upper level has ventilation slit right and left and 3-light window with shutters at first floor to left. Interior: Not inspected.
