4/36 Dowland - II

Farmhouse. Possibly C17. Rendered stone rubble and cob partly repaired with rendered concrete block, with slate roof with raised eaves, hipped ends and gabled rear stair projection. Roof continued in asbestos slate over rear circa C19 outshut. Rear lateral half-gabled stone rubble hall chimney stack with tall brick shaft, projecting stone rubble kitchen chimney stack with brick shaft at lower left-hand hipped end and further rendered brick chimney stack to back kitchen in rear outshut. 3 room and through passage plan with hall heated by rear lateral stack, unheated inner room used as store and heated kitchen at lower end. Stair added in gabled projection to rear of through. passage probably in late C17 or early C18. Stair removed probably in C19 and inserted in through passage and projecting stair wing used as dairy. Outshut added to rear of lower kitchen end and stair projection in circa C19. 2 storeys asymmetrical 3-window front. Ground floor with late C19 2-light casement to left, rendered C20 porch with lean-to slate roof and plank door, C20 2-light casement to right and plank door to inner room on right. First floor with 2 C20 gabled half-dormers with C20 fenestration flanking C20 2-light casement above entrance. Entrance to first floor of store in higher hipped end as ground rises to right. Interior with wide passage with circa C19 stair inserted to rear, C20 chimney pieces, inner room used as store and roof timbers not accessible but thought by tenant to be original.
